reply to this post: In evidence-based practice, all aspects of practice must be carefully considered before implementing that practice in a healthcare setting. Evidence-based practice has been tried and proven to work, with evidence pointing to significant results. To differentiate between statistical and clinical significance, Carpenter (2021) points out the questions each strives to answer. Carpenter asks whether the results of the research are due to chance in statistical significance, and whether the intervention/treatment is the cause in clinical significance (p. 51). Carpenter also explains that statistical significance refers to the results of chance because it is not likely that it was chance alone; however, clinical significance refers to the practical or implied importance of the effects. How can you use clinical significance to support positive outcomes in your project? Even with the definitions in front of me, I still have a very hard time grasping the different research terms and understanding their specific definitions. If the definition is correct for clinical significance, which states that an implied effect is important, this can help reinforce the importance of the nurse practice change proposal in evaluating and improving hospital pressure injury prevention interventions. If the hospital takes the additional interventions to heart and makes the changes, patient care can significantly improve, patients will have shorter hospital stays, nurses will be more ready and educated, increasing in confidence, and the rates of pressure injuries would fall, improving those facilities. Wouk (2025) points out that both clinical and statistical significance together would strengthen evidence-based practice, communicating that the consumers of the practice change would have the best available evidence to meet patients’ individual needs.
